Funny (?)
Some bizarre things run through my brain. Take this for instance.

Background: From November 2000 to December 2001, I had a roommate named Bob. He is very opinionated.
One of the things he feels strongly about is his beverages. Amongst other things, he has a distaste for Dr. Pepper. He once said that it tasted like 'Coke run through a dirty sock.' I didn't agree, but thought this was amusing.

Today: I drank some Dr. Pepper. It made me have to go to the bathroom a lot. So I thought to myself,'Man, this Dr. Pepper is running through me like a dirty sock!'

heh

No More Waiting
That's right, my favorite band -- POOR OLD LU -- has a new album called 'The Waiting Room' and it's available in stores TOMORROW! (unless you're reading this on a day other than Sept 23, 2002). So, rush on down to your nearest Best Buy, LifeWay store, etc., to pick it up! OR you could order it direct from Tooth & Nail. This is one album that is certain not to disappoint (me--your results may vary).

Back on the See-Saw
So, the Tag-Board was flaky, too. I give up on these third-party, dot-com, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants augmentation-to-your-blog companies. Greg found some asp code, modified it, and now we have dependable commenting service. Now, the website won't take forever to load either. Test it out!

Comment Boxes go Down, Tag Board goes Up
Since the haloscan website keeps going down, it makes the comment boxes disappear, and the blog to load slowly. Therefore, until I can find a better way to add comments for the posts, I have installed the Tag Board at bottom left (under the links). I hope that this feature doesn't go the way of the message boxes. So, please test it out by posting a message.
Thanks!

History Jeopardesque

Category: American History

Answer: Weeks behind schedule and the massive Sierra Nevada mountains still to be crossed--on September 18, 1846--the 89 members of this ill-fated party realize they are running short of supplies and send two men ahead to California to bring back food. They began their journey in Springfield, Illinois earlier that summer. On October 29, this party found themselves snowbound in the Sierras.

Big news from Marianne!
Marianne Thomas is engaged to Jeremy Little!! Here is an excerpt from Jeremy's email announcement:

"I proposed to her on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Here are a couple of pictures of us right after I proposed. Oh, she said yes of course. We are headed back to Houston today. I am using my mom's computer, and do not have access to everyone's email address at present, so please feel free to forward this on to anyone. We are extremely happy, and are looking at sometime in December to tie the knot."

Congrats to Marianne and Jeremy!!

A Perspective on Sports
I came across this article, which I thought too important not to share:

Sports can distract, but they don't heal
[excerpt] In truth, our lives are what we make of them. We work hard and, at the end of the day, in a world that is often mundane, the ability to watch one or two sports games a week is a kind of blessing, a relief from what is often a difficult routine. But if we want any kind of real emotional balance, we must get it from our loved ones, family, friends, co-workers. :..whole story..:

Words of Encouragement

"I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." -- Psalm 121:1 and 2

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind." -- 2 Timothy 1:7

"Cast all your cares on Him, because He cares for you." -- 1 Peter 5:7

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." -- John 3:16

Feline Jeopardesque

In honor of our feline friends--Ansel and Pixel--who will be 6 months old on Sunday, I give you a bit of kitty trivia:

Category: Cats

Answer: This reflective layer of a cat's eye is made of guanine crystals. It captures the light that's already gone through the cat's receptor cells and sends them back, giving the cells a 'double dose' of the light, which is why cats see so well in dim light.

Board Games in the News
Where Do You Put 4,823 Games?
Tony Elam, Rice University associate dean of engineering, is certainly a master of his own impressive collection of 4,823 games. Although he owns role-playing games and collectible card games, some going back to the 1800s, board games are his specialty.

Right now, he's into European board games, which he says are of better quality and variety than American games. One of his favorites is a new German strategy game called Puerto Rico, which is based on the colonization of the Caribbean.

Big Game Day Session Report
Are you ready for this? I had a game-a-thon at the apartment on Saturday--played for 14 1/2 hours. Here's what hit the table:

Crokinole
On my new board, purchased that morning. We played this all throughout the day, mostly when people showed up and a game was in progress. It was a big hit with all.

Through the Desert (German version)
Introduced this to one person, and the rest of us knew it. It turned out to be a close one, with Rob at first place, me at second, and Chad coming in at third. The new guy came in last.

Citadels
A few more people strolled in, so we played a 7-person game of Citadels. This was one of the better sessions of it, in my opinion. It seemed that the newbie would win, then it seemed like Bob would, but it turned out to be someone we really didn't suspect--Maja. I got killed by the assassin a whopping THREE times this game, but still tied for second place.

Mississippi Queen
It was my first time playing this game. The lead changed a number of times, with myself in the lead for the home stretch. However, I thought my win was inevitable, slipped up and made a mistake, and got bumped into second place by Shane. I really look forward to playing this one again.

Dragon's Gold
Playing with the advanced rules didn't go over too well with a couple of players who had played it only with basic rules before. The 'stealing card' really left a bad taste in peoples' mouths. I think both these factors led to a handful of stalemates in negotiations. However, I enjoyed the game even though I came in last place. Rob came in first place.

Alles im Imer (the 'bucket game')
We played three rounds of this game. It's light, fun, and great filler material. It's also fun to see how people choose to stack their buckets. Farm animal noises were included. Chad won.

Filthy Rich
This was my first time with this game. It's an interesting game of capitalism. Buying businesses, paying taxes, and making investments. The guy who taught us the game (Chad) ran away with it, with three luxuries. I finished in second place with one luxury.

Guillotine
A neat little game of collecting heads. I find this game quite random, but okay for filler material. I ended up winning.

Piratenbucht
One of my new favorites. Everyone obviously enjoyed this one, and a few mentioned they would probably purchase it. Everyone had fun speaking with pirate voices. Some of the best battles came out of this game. I shot a 4/4 on an opponent once. The game ended with the telling of tall tales, which added quite a bit of fun to the game. I came in dead last, but only 1 pt behind the person in front of me, and at least I defeated Blackbeard on the very last round. Chad won with a commanding lead.

Dragon Delta
As the night was coming to a close, one couple requested a shorter game that they knew. Dragon Delta fit the bill. We had fun diverting people's paths and knocking each other off course. I came out with a win, as everyone was concentrating on the leader.

Cities and Knights of Catan
The last game of the night. There were three of us, and two of us wanted to play this. I had played this once before, and we had one newbie to teach (but he had played SoC MANY times before). This was quite a close game, with each of us owning 11 VPs before the last round. I upgraded a city improvement to get the last metropolis, 2 more points, and the win.

Other than these, Fluxx and TransAmerica were played, but I wasn't in on those games, so I am not sure of the outcome.

What a great day of gaming! If I hadn't had such little sleep the two nights before, I would have wanted to go on and on. I really enjoyed the gaming and the company.
