compelling, as was the first
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Rated PG-13 (for violence)
new line cinema
- 4.5 STARS

Jackson continues his streak as a fine story-teller. It is true, he took more liberties with the text than with FOTR. However, I believe that he made some great decisions to keep the movie within the three hour frame and to make the story flow. His port of the literature to screen was so true, that at parts, I experienced deja vu. We anxiously await part three and the DVD release!

Christmas Jeopardesque

Category: Jolly Old St. Nick

Answer: Not the brain child of Coca-Cola ad executives (as 'net lore would have it)--these 'real life' people were the early inspiration of our modern-day Santa Claus.

Zeitgeist
Well, today's the day. The Two Towers hits the theaters. Not that I will be able to see it today, but many thousands will. Speaking of many thousands, check out the year-end summary of google searches here -- 2002 Year-End Google Zeitgeist. The thing that surprised me in the 'most searched for movie' category: That Lord of the Rings was so low at #10. The thing that DIDN'T surprise me in the 'losing ground' category: All Your Base Are Belong To Us. Out with the old... and in with Las Ketchup.

Reading about Christmas
I just read a very good article about Christmas and people's attitudes toward it. Read it here. Have you read any good articles, books, etc. about Christmas? If so, share them by using the comment box.

May the peace and joy of Christ be with you.

Power's Back Up
We packed up our overnight bag, the cats and their litter box, and spent the night with the Dumaises last night, who got power back between 6:30 and 8. This morning I called to check if the power was on at our apartment, and the answering machine picked up! Thanks for all your prayers, and continue to pray for those who are still without power or a place to stay. Enjoy your weekend!

State of Emergency
Wednesday brought ice, ice, and more ice to the area. We left work around 3:30 that day, and the power went out at our apartment at 1am the next morning. All through the night, we heard what sounded like rifle shots in the wooded lot behind our building. It was the sound of snapping trees, brought down by the weight of the ice. We still don't have power at our place, but the power and phones came back on at work, so we are enjoying electricity for the time being. We hope that power will be resored to our home by the time we get there this afternoon. Temperatures got down to the mid twenties last night, and it was C-O-L-D! It is supposed to get down to the teens tonight. If we don't get power by then, we will find a place to stay. Fortunately, the precipitation stopped yesterday. Otherwise it could have been worse.
From the radio, we found out that over a million customers (households, businesses, etc) were without power yesterday, and that about half of that number were in Raleigh alone. Here's CNN's coverage of the storm.

I will keep the site updated with power conditions as much as I can.
