New Game Acquisitions
As consolation prizes for selling my truck, we purchased Goldland (a "big box" game), Odin's Ravens (one of the Kosmos' 2-player series), and die Mauer (see commentary below). We had a chance to play each of them over the Memorial Day weekend.
Board Game Survivor
Puerto Rico was the last game standing in about.com's Board Game Survivor.
Mafia on NPR
Although not a 'board game' or even a 'card game,' this game gets played in a lot of our groups. Listen to the audio segment here.
Building Fun!
Have you ever had one of those gaming experiences that was almost literally a laugh a minute? If you haven't, you're not playing the right games! :)
Well, Thursday night was case in point for me. A little game called 'die Mauer' (translated as 'The Wall') was the gem of the evening.
It's a simple game of bluffing. The Master Builder (which switches to the next person each round) chooses from one of the seven pieces of wall in his/her hand and places it in fist, and everyone else does the same. The contents of the fists are then revealed. If one of the other players matches what the MB chose, they get to 'build' their piece and add it to 'The Wall.' If nobody else chooses the MB's piece type, the MB gets to build his piece. Another option for the MB is to put nothing in his fist. If nobody else reveals an empty fist, the MB gets to build any piece of his choice from his supply. However, if any other player chose to display an empty fist as well, the other player GIVES the MB a piece from their supply, thus penalizing the MB and rewarding the matching player. The object of the game is to get rid of all your pieces.
From this explanation, you might find it odd that we had so much fun with it. However, the bluffing and guesswork had us in knots. Whether it was the company, the game itself, or a combination, last night's experience has put this game on my 'to buy' list.
