a grain of wisdom
"Happiness is like manna; it is to be gathered in grains, and enjoyed every day. It will not keep; it cannot be accumulated; nor have we got to go out of ourselves or into remote places to gather it, since it is rained down from Heaven at our very doors."
--Tryon Edwards

Merry Christmas from the Dreifuss Family!

March of this year, Bert and I were sitting across from a nurse – a nurse who was laughing at us for doubting the results of two positive at-home pregnancy tests. “Yep!” she said, “You’re pregnant!”

Up to that point in the year, we were planning and training to run the Midnight Sun Marathon in June for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We instantly changed gears and started getting ready for a new addition to our family. 2003 is, for us, the year of the baby. From the moment we found out, our world was changed – and the changes have only increased as the year progressed.

We did manage to squeeze in a few trips before our free-flying couple days ended. In May, we drove up to beautiful Virginia mountains and to Blacksburg to visit Bert’s friend J. Simmons. For the Fourth of July, we managed to spend some time in Asheville at our honeymoon bed and breakfast and we visited Shane and Sarah McLaughlin in Knoxville.

Besides trips, this year has also seen the start of our Young Couples small group at church. We have joined together with 6 of the most incredible couples you could ever imagine. Each of them have an incredible heart for others and for God. We are constantly amazed at how God uses them!

On November 9th, our lives were indelibly changed with Emily Anne’s birth. To be honest, the first few weeks were very difficult – filled with lots of uncertainty and stress about caring for this little person and trying to do it on very little sleep. Now that we have rounded the one-month corner, there is a ray of sunshine – we are starting to get into a routine, she is starting to show us her personality and we are starting to realize what an incredible journey parenting is going to be. Nothing in the world can prepare you for it!

Most years, I closed our Christmas letter by commenting on how packed and exciting that year has been, and how I couldn’t imagine it could get any more exciting. This year, I’m keeping my mouth shut. It can get more exciting. It can be more full.

So as we celebrate Emily’s first Christmas, we can truly say, “No mind has seen, no ear has heard, …. What God has in mind for those who love Him”. (1 Corinthians 2:9) We hope that you’ve had an incredible year as well. Best wishes for an even better 2004! Merry Christmas!

Yours in Christ –
The Dreifuss Family

Perspective
Our pastor shared a similar story this past Sunday. Take the time; it's a good read:

A Friend In Need
This guy isn't a personal friend of mine, but he's one of the many men and women who have risked their lives for their country. Please read the following article:

my buddy

Emily (and her parents) finally meet Coleman Lee Blake.
And dads got a chance to try out a new game (see yesterday's post).

Speaking of the little angel (focus back on Emily), she had a great doctor's visit today.
She's really gaining steam -- and weight. She's at NINE pounds and one-half ounce already!

More Emily/Cole pics.

dad's new toys
I received two new games in the mail this week. Soon, I will post reviews of them both on the Gaming Page. Hopefully, I will have another treat for that page as well.

Meg and I played the game pictured here [Carcassonne: The Castle] for the first time tonight, and it received a nod of approval from the both of us. It's very similar to the original Carcassonne, but has a couple of interesting mechanisms that just set it apart. Strange thing is that Meg rates vanilla Carcassonne a 2/10, yet gives The Castle a solid 8. Go figure, but you won't hear me complain -- she wants to play it again!

Game on...

Games as Gifts
I love to read news stories that feature the kinds of games that Meg and I like to play. Hopefully, Emily will like to play them, too -- someday. Speaking of the little one, there are new pics of her. Just click on the PIC PAGE link to the left. Have a great weekend!

LOTR Prequel?
I had hoped this would materialize. It's not a done deal by a long shot, but Peter Jackson would be perfect directing a film version of "The Hobbit" after proving himself with the LOTR movie trilogy:

In unrelated news, I have been extremely busy with Emily and an extra CAD project for work. I plan to update the website this weekend, time permitting.
