I'm 94% Dixie

Well, at least according to this survey. Enjoy.

Update: as of 9:20 on Sunday morning, this link doesn't work. You might want to try doing a google search for 'yankee dixie quiz.'

Book Review : the five people you meet in heaven
by Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie

This story will move you. I don't think I've ever bought and finished a book in the same day, let alone in the same evening. It only took me five hours to devour this little gem.

The subject is the life and death of what seems to be a nobody -- or perhaps an everyman named Eddie. His journey is told in a non-chronological manner that spreads the tapestry of Eddie's life. His life is cryptic, and the mysteries are gradually solved through the telling.

As the title suggests, Eddie meets five people in heaven that explain to him "how we are all connected." Each person provides a bit more understanding to Eddie's enigmatic life. Albom gracefully teaches Eddie such lessons with vibrant phrases such as, "you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind."

Though short [196 5X7" pages], this is no short story. The crucial characters are fleshed out well, and the end isn't as predictable as you might guess.

All in all, it's a good read. Take an evening to learn about Eddie, and perhaps a bit about yourself.

New 'Cool Stuff'

Scroll down just a bit and on the left side you'll see I added a few new links to the 'cool' section. That section was getting really stale. No comments about the rest of the links! :)

16-bit Rock

I know it seems antithetical to post this considering the previous blog entry, but here goes:

Check out this band: all they play are songs from the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

And they say creativity is dead.

signal:noise ratio
These days I feel I'm drowning in a sea of words and ideas, in print and on screen. Internet news, TV news, water cooler talk, magazines, books, radio, and that song that I just can't seem to get out of my head -- all pouring forth in an endless stream of vowels and consonants, verbs, nouns, and adjectives. It makes me wonder if there really is an original interesting thought. It all just makes my head spin. Even as I write this, Outlook interrupted to remind me to go take a walk.

Remember your folks' ubiquitous complaint: 'I can't even hear myself think.' That's exactly how I feel sometimes. Maybe it's a sign I'm getting old. I know -- I have no right to say that at my age. It makes people in their thirties feel ancient. Maybe it's just a sign that I am 'settling down.'

Well, here's a sign: I don't listen to Classic Rock as much as I used to -- I'm getting tired of it. I find myself enjoying the kind of music that I chastised my parents for listening to. You know, the more mellow stuff. Don't get me wrong -- I still like to rock, but my tinnitus makes me question the sanity of the phrase, 'If it's too loud, you're too old.'

Perhaps I need to just take the advice of my Outlook assistant and take a 'walk to clear my head.'

That reminds me of a song . . .

random reflections

I'm back on the WW2 kick again. With some birthday money, I purchased Call of Duty for the PC. Excellent game -- if you have an up-to-date computer with video card, you should download the demo. I also ordered the "World At War" DVD series. I've heard that it's the definitive collection. There aren't any negative comments at Amazon for it. I also recently re-watched Saving Private Ryan. Excellent story! It has a really good message that nicely correlates to the Christian life. I should write about that sometime, but there's probably already a dozen such essays.

In my war mindset, I noticed something interesting on my way to work the other day. A popular carmaker name probably doesn't sell to well to war vets: KIA. If you don't get that one, you don't watch enough war movies. It's funny how context can make all the difference.

Speaking of birthdays, I had a great one on Tuesday. Left work early, went to a Japanese steakhouse with my ladies and received a Zondervan Handbook to the Bible as my gift. Would have been a really nice birthday with just that -- nice meal, good gift, and great company.

But then as I walked into the living room, there were friends there to greet me and ready to play games. That was the icing on the proverbial cake -- and we had some real cake, too. Strawberry with cream cheese icing. mmmmmmmm

Life is good. We're having an early V-day dinner tonight and we're going to watch Lost in Translation and Life is Beautiful. On Sunday, I'm planning to see LOTR:ROTK again with a good friend.

Hope you have a great weekend, too!

Lesser of Evils

Sometimes in life one is faced with tough choices. Decisions that weigh in the pros and the cons, the positives and negatives, the good and the bad. Other choices in life are just too easy, when you have all the information.

On Saturday, Meg and I enjoyed a 'day off' from our diet -- a day that we both look forward to with immense anticipation. It only happens one seventh of the time, and we cherish every moment, relishing the calories and fat that we are so deprived of the other six days of the week.

So, armed with a dietary carte blanche and an immediate and intense need for food, I planned to dine at the fine establishment of Hardee's -- mainly b/c it's the nearest fast food establishment to our apartment. Not knowing the menu too well (remember, we're on a diet mostly), I clicked my way to the Hardee's website to check our choices.

They have a really neat app on their site that allows you to pick what items you want and put them in a bag. I didn't quite know what this was for, but I was hoping that they had become so high tech as to receive my order online and be ready with my Angus thickburger when I got there. It wasn't so. But once you're done picking the items with which you want to stuff your face -- complete with options of removing ingredients -- and click 'View Results,' instead of being asked for a credit card number, you are given a bill of health.

The item we chose -- ONE 2/3 pound, double-patty Cheeseburger with bacon -- came out to a grand total of one thousand three hundred and one and a half [1301.5] calories! Dare we mention the fat content? It was a whopping 96 grams!!!! Forty grams of saturated fat and 205.8 mgs of artery-clogging cholesterol!!!!!!!!!!!! {ad infinitum}

Needless to say, we forewent the Hardee's gut bombs and decided on Chic-Fil-A value meals -- which COMBINED (2 sandwiches and 2 orders of fries) were only slightly more caloric (appx. 1700) than the Hardee's behemoth singleton.

It's really no wonder that we're the fattest nation on earth. I don't see any other country coming close any time soon.

Welcome to February
  posted by Meg
I was walking through our house last night/this morning (It was about 3:00am) and God reminded me of some important things in life. My husband and daughter were both sleeping soundly in their beds – both healthy, both happy. Both cats were curled up at the foot of our bed. The house was warm, in spite of the chill outside. There was an incredible peacefulness within. The living room was still a bit disheveled; the kitchen sink had dirty dishes in it; the dryer was hiding clean clothes. My mother told me, right after Emily was born, that my house may never look quite as pristine, but my family should be healthy and happy.

We are gratefully moving into a quieter portion of the year. It is traditionally a bit dull and cold, but that’s o.k. It will give us time to watch our little girl grow and catch our breath after the holidays.

Disappointing, but Fun
Wow, what a game! I think that Superbowl 38 was one of the more enjoyable championship games to watch. Unfortunately, my home team didn't win. But it was refreshing to see such a close competition. Considering the Panthers' season, it's been typical to win in these close situations. There have been a good number of overtime wins for this team, and there was even a fourth quarter comeback-for-a-win in Reliant stadium against the Texans.

All in all, the Panthers had a great season. I think that they should be a contender in the playoffs again next year if they continue taking each game at a time with their positive team attitude.

Carolina in '04!
