Strange Coincidences
I just wanted to point out how cool it is that yesterday's post time (12:21) is a palindrome, which kind of fits the theme of Twilight-Zoneishness
AND
Monday's post about losing ten pounds was posted at EXACTLY 10:00 am!
~~~~ Doo - dee - doo - doo, Doo - dee - doo - doo ~~~~
BTW, I did not plan this. I do not edit the times and dates of my posts.
Um, Forgettable
I don't have complete recollection of the film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' from Friday night. I do have a photographic memory of our theater experience, however.
Thirty minutes into the movie, Joel [Jim Carrey] decides that he'll have his memories of Clementine [Kate Winslet] erased, in return for her erasure of him. At that point, the screen began to go completely white, and then to black. I thought that this was a brilliant Kaufman-esque theater effect, reinforced by theater staff entering to let us know that there were technical difficulties resulting from a projector 'Brain Warp.' The dozen of us in the seats erupted with laughter. "This must be a joke," someone said. To that, the usher asked what movie this was. He laughed, too. The irony.
The theater manager was completely useless. He reminded me of Chief Wiggum, stuttering that he was sorry for any inconvenience. Any Inconvenience!? We had the rare luxury of babysitters just to see this film! And it could be another two months before we had the same opportunity.
We waited a little while longer. The film came back on, only to flitter off again. Then a few minutes later there was sound, but no video. That was it -- we marched back to the lobby and I told the manager what happened.
He responded with "What do you want me to do?" Note to everyone in service positions out in Cyberland: This is NOT an acceptable reply if you want to stay in business.
"I want my money back," I said, trying hard to keep the frustrated tone from my words.
We received a full refund. Good thing for us, b/c it would be very inconvenient to have to boycott the Carmike Fifteen in Raleigh, NC.
So, I really want to find out what happens. I'm the type of guy who likes to see a movie from beginning to end. None of this start from the middle stuff when you flip to a good movie on TV. I'd rather spend the $5 to rent it at Blockbuster.
So, does anyone want to babysit for us so we can find out what happens to Jim Carrey's memory?
You can send your resumes to... now where was I?
10 lb. Net Loss
After hitting the gym and eating breakfast this morning, I got on the scale. It seems that three weeks of near daily exercise has paid off. After about two months, I finally hit my first weight goal of being ten pounds lighter.
How did I get here, you may ask. Well, we subscribe loosely to 'Body For Life', Meg fixes meals from Eating for Life, and we exercise almost daily. On days that I don't get to the gym, I do DDR. I also take one to two walks during the day when the weather is nice.
It's been hard work, but definitely worth it. Physically, I feel better -- less sluggish, more energy. It's also helps start the day out right with a good attitude when you see scale numbers that are encouraging.
This quote also helps: "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels." Okay, so it came from Meg's Oprah magazine -- but it helps when the going gets tough.
My next challenge: losing another ten!
No one is to blame
Since last you heard from me, I've played multiplayer Call of Duty online a few times now. I really like it, but I'm really not so good. My best record is 4 kills and 4 deaths. But I'll continue playing with the hopes that I will improve. And even if I don't improve, I'll probably continue playing. It makes me think of the other things at which I'm not particularly skilled, but I enjoy doing anyway.
Singing. I mean, who doesn't like to sing? But as you can see on American Idol, some people are poorly mistaken about their abilities. I have been told that I'm not tone-deaf, though. That's a plus. And who really cares when you're singing by yourself on a commute?
Doodling. Mine is mostly geometrical shapes. I have done a good Dilbert in the past, but he's not that hard. I used to envy friends in school who could create their own cartoon characters or mimic those in popular comic books. I doodle all the time, but I wouldn't keep any of it to show my grandkids.
Basketball. I love a good game of 21, or 3 on 3, etc. But my shot is so-so, I'm short, and I get winded easily. Where's the rec league for guys like me?
Well, I'm sure there's more, but that's enough self-deprecation for one day. So, tell me -- what are your hobbling hobbies?
From the 'Well Duh' Department
According to an article on the Fox News website, obesity isn't caused by corporate greed:
"Those who overeat should blame themselves, not the fast food industry that employs almost 12 million people and is the nation's second largest employer behind the government, Republicans said."
Sounds like Ronald McDonald has some well-funded lobbyists!
Today's post is served with special sarcasm sauce, full-caloried and absolutely not fat free.
From the 'Way Too Much Time On Their Hands' [WTMTOTH] Department
This dude made a spherical version of the PS2 video game console. Very cool, but why? Well, he did win second place in some design competition. Wonder what the prize was... an Xbox? :)
CD Review
Starflyer 59
I am the Portuguese Blues
It’s a really good cheeseburger. You know, the sandwich that’s custom made, and hits the spot every time. They never get the order wrong, and it comes with some tasty taters. That’s the best illustration that I can give. This CD hits that sweet spot: some straight-up rock ‘n’ roll with great riffs and catchy tunes.
From track 1 to 10, Martin & company really deliver. Jason’s ethereal vocals are spun throughout a solid serving of electric guitar and near flawless drumwork. Each song is a great ‘a la carte’ offering, yet they all come together to form a satisfying meal.
My only complaint is that -- at a mere 37 minutes running time -- I’m left hungry for more.
SHMILY!
I just wanted to take a minute and express my gratitude to my husband, Bert, for all of the time that he puts in to our website. Many of you get to see the beautiful results of many long hours of uploading pictures, finding articles of interest, and perfecting layout.
Thank you, my love, for all that you do!
Another Comment on 'The Passion'
My wife's grandfather had this wise opinion of Mel's film interpretation of Jesus' last 12 hours on earth:
[We went] "to see 'The Passion' on Sunday. We three all felt the same. The picture is a must, but before going to see it, people should read all four of the Gospels first. Without a background, the audience will be lost at the very beginning."
I agree. I sometimes assume that people already know the story. For those who don't, I pray that this movie prods them to learn more -- from the Word Himself.
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." John 1:14
The Passion of the Christ
It was an extraordinary movie. The crowd was silent following this film. How could you say anything? The images on the screen told the story. The story that a great many of us has heard, and yet not seen quite like this. I feel that this horrible depiction of Jesus' beating and crucifixion has to be somewhat close to what happened. And to witness such agony and suffering knowing that my sin had a part in it made me cringe. It really made me sick of my sin. And it made me want to do better. It instilled in me the desire -- much like Private Ryan in response to his Captain's plea -- to 'earn this.' Although I know I could never do so.
I hope and pray that you will consider seeing this film. Know beforehand that it is terribly uncomfortable to watch, and shouldn't be taken lightly. But if you seriously consider the God who did this for us, it should move you to action, and to prayer.
He took on the sin of the world. By His wounds we are healed.
