not EARLY enough VOTING
Being the responsible citizen that I am (ahem), I visited my local early (absentee) voting place to make my choices for President, Senate, House, and neighborhood gaffer (not really, but doesn't it sound like a political positon?).
Early voting has been open 6 days a week for the past month, I think. But due to the move (see earlier posts on the topic) and the fact that I have no idea who can best fill the Agriculture Commissioner spot, we waited until today.
The polls opened at 11am -- a bit too late if you want my opinion. We had planned to arrive promptly at 10:30, but circumstances (where'd you put the.......) and baby deemed that too lofty a goal.
So we arrived at 11am, got in line, and began to pass the time with conversation. Forty minutes and about 10 yards down the line later, we thought it best to estimate our stay in the queue. Meg went on a scouting mission and informed me that there was a sign about 50 yards down with the following message:
2 HOUR WAIT
Even fuzzy math told us that we would be there for a while. Em was getting fussy, and I was getting very thirsty.
We deemed it prudent to have Meg stand in line with the child whilst I ran to hunt and gather for some over-priced vended refreshments. After their consumption, we waited for about another 10 minutes.
We both thought it would be best for Meg to go home and get the little one in for a nap while I exercised my painful democratic function.
So I waited........and waited some more..........
And after three and one-quarter hours, I made my selections and was done.
So, when you go to the polls on Tuesday and whip in and out in five minutes, you'll have gullible suckers like me to thank for the expedition of the voting process.
Happy Election Day!!

NOT the 'Same As It Ever Was'
This week I picked up the latest in the plug-it-in-and-play TV games from the Jakks company. This one features two of my favorites: Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga, and three throwaway titles (unless you include Pole Position, which was malfunctional in my copy).
Some of the features that I really dig:
- It's made for everyone. You don't have to even read a manual to plug this thing in and get going. And the bonus is that you can unhook and take it to a friend's house with miniscule effort.
- Fast load times. When I'm killing time, I have no patience for staring at a "LOADING" screen.
- They're classic, time-tested and grossly popular games that have a zero learning curve.
Now onto the grody:
- The response time for the joystick is less than perfect. This can really hinder you when you're running away from them colored ghosts.
- The fire button is on the LEFT of the joystick. This has to be my biggest complaint. And Meg agrees 100%. We were forced to turn the playpad upside down in order to be able to fire with breakneck speed. This causes a reversal in the joystick maneuvering that punishes more than having to swith to southpaw on the trigger.
- The dern thing hurts! After just 20 minutes of play, my hand was aching. Now, I know that ergonomics wasn't big in the 80s, but we don't have to be THAT true to the real deal.
All in all, I'd have to say that Jakks failed my fun test. I returned the unit in 24 hours. Now, if they can fix the problems listed above, they will earn back my business.
Party on!

Autumn
The weather is getting cooler. Leaves are changing colors.
Football's on the TV. Baseball's winding down.
The sound of mowers is replaced with that of leaf blowers.
Lush greens and bright flowers make way for yellows and browns.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
I appreciate the cyclic nature of life. It's easier to bear the winter when we know that spring is around the corner. When the heat of summer seems unbearable, comfort comes with the fall breezes.
Soon enough, we'll be hearing "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" over department store PA systems.
Here's to the changing of the seasons....
