EMAIL PROBLEMS
It has come to our attention that our primary email addresses haven't been forwarding properly this weekend. As far as we can tell, the last time it worked properly was sometime on Friday.
The problem has been fixed. However, any emails that were sent to bert at dreifuss dot org or meg at dreifuss dot org over the weekend did NOT make it through to us.
If you have sent email to either of those addresses this weekend, please resend.
Thanks!

Top 100 Gadgets
This list is certainly not comprehensive, but it's fairly representative of all that is cool in gadgetry.
My favorites from the list:
#99 SWINGLINE 747 STAPLER, 2002 | I don't own one, but I have something similar. There's something about the tactile experience and the simplicity of its utility.
#67 LEATHERMAN PST, 1983 | I actually own one of these, given to me as a going away present when I left Houston. A prized possession of mine, likely more due to its sentimental value than its undeniable usefulness.
#63 MAGLITE FLASHLIGHT, 1979 | I own three of these. Indestructible and only surpassed by head lamps, in my opinion.
#58 PANASONIC TOUGHBOOK 18, 2003 | One of the items on the list I really wish I had. Take the power of a laptop and give it the qualities of a Hummer. Pure testosterone. Not to mention the ability to play Minesweeper AND check gmail.
#43 HANDSPRING VISOR, 1999 | I bought my first in early 2001. My second (actually a Treo) in November 2003. My wife has one, too. I haven't left home without it (much) since.
#6 CASIO QV-10 DIGITAL CAMERA, 1996 | Not this particular model, but digital cameras in general. Anything that makes photography less expensive is good by me!
#2 ZENITH SPACE COMMAND TV REMOTE CONTROL, 1956 | We had this EXACT model when I was a kid (we had a really old TV then). What made this TV/Remote system so classic was that when I turned the crank on the elevator in my Matchbox garage, it had the added benefit of changing the channel. Bonus!
Honorable Mention: #25 NINTENDO GAME BOY, 1989 | I had one near the beginning, and only had Tetris for a while. What makes this the choice for honorable mention is the way it ushered in the entire genre of high-res handheld gaming. Those Tiger games don't count!

the Pizza of Catan
This probably belongs on the gaming page (and I'll likely post it there, too), but I think that Catan has enough popularity for the general public to find this interesting (maybe):
The leading Pizza delivery restaurant in Germany is teaming up with Kosmos to promote the Settlers of Catan board game. About 300,000 pizza boxes will be adorned with Catan art and shipped with a simple paper-and-pencil version of the game. The goal is to increase awareness of this award-winning game.
Original article: Spielbox Article [ Translated Page ]
Source: I heard about this through Rick Thornquist's news blurb [brought to us by GameFest] in the latest GeekSpeak from BoardGameGeek.com.
Related Note: Settlers of Catan turns 10 years old this year.
Legal Note: Box shown is not the actual box, but what the box might look like if Apprentice contestants designed it.
Additional Note: Note that these notes are longer than the actual post! This is getting way out of hand.
End Note: Is this not the MOST annotated, linked, and obscurely referenced post on ddo 3VAR??
Note to Self: Try to avoid being too geeky on the front page of your own website.

Run Like the Wind Molasses
On Sunday, Meg and I ran in the Run for the Roses 5K [ link ] here in Raleigh. It was my first experience in a real foot race since Field Day back in grade school.
I finished, and even met a personal goal, but I was definitely in the back of the pack. At least I wasn't DAL.
I have to say that it's not my usual idea of fun. But it was fun. A somewhat grueling type of fun. Challenging, rewarding fun. In many ways it's like marriage itself. And just like marriage, I'd do it all over again.
At the finish line, there were ladies handing out roses. I didn't realize until after I took one that they were only intended for the female racers. Once I figured this out, I gave mine to my lovely wife. She liked the gesture, but moreover she appreciated the 'gift' of my participation with her in one of her favorite pastimes. It was an ideal way to spend the day before Valentine's day.
We're planning on running another 5K in April. I think I'm hooked -- but don't bet on me running any marathons.

As if paying and doing taxes weren't punishment enough...
It seems that the IRS and Intuit are footing the bill for tax software ( www.taxfreedom.com ).
Yes, it is great news. Except that we already bought our copy. And Best Buy doesn't do returns for opened software.
Yay for the procrastinators!

The Impending Doom
It started out yesterday as a slight headache and minor sinus burn. At first sign, I took some Tylenol Cold stashed in my cube drawer. As I rend the capsules from their foil and plastic cells, I notice the expiration date: 9/04.
Well, it's all I had. Anyway, do expired meds lose effectiveness immediately? And how do they know the exact month? Or do the meds have the reverse effect once expired, like some comic-book antivirus?
At any rate, it's got me. The recurring headache, itchy sore throat, and burning sinuses are its footprints. Not a fun day for me.
Then I see Meg break out the cold medicine. She has the same symptoms.
And the circle continues....
