A Musical Drama in Two Parts

ACT ONE

Time: Yesterday Morning
Place: My House

I receive a message from my cousin that he'd have to cancel our twice weekly (biweekly?) jog. I see that it is raining out, so I understand why.

Wanting to keep my exercise momentum and take advantage of the above normal temps, I decide to venture a jog on my own in the neighborhood.

Equipment: Running shoes, cotton shorts, running shirt, my mp3 player and a windbreaker.

As I begin my journey, I comment to myself that the rain isn't all that bad. At least it isn't 20-some degrees out.

Then about 5 minutes in, the rain gets more intense. Another 5 minutes, and it's just pounding the pavement with more intensity than my feet on same.

I decide to tough it out and make my workout worthwhile. So I press on. The jog/walk isn't as challenging as when I'm with my cousin, but I'm also not just walking in the rain.

All the while my music is playing, and I am oblivious to the fact that water is seeping through my windbreaker. This is not a waterproof covering, I now remember.

Then the music stops. Fear seeps in about as fast as the water into the windbreaker's pocket.

So I trudge along until I get home. 20 minutes -- not bad.

After drying off, I test my mp3 player. Hoping it was just a spent battery, I experiment with another AAA from the kitchen drawer. No dice.

Bummitude sets in. Now I'm going to have to spend money from the recent sale of my PS2 for a new mp3 player. No way am I running without entertainment. Running itself is punishment enough.

All day I'm in a funk because my mp3 player died. I shop around for deals, and almost agree to buy a used player from craigslist.org. Too late, someone else took advantage of the $25 bargain.

ACT TWO

Time: This Morning
Place: My House

This morning I get up. I tell myself that if I had an mp3 player, I'd go for a jog or at least a walk.

Something tells me to look for another battery and test my mp3 player again.

...

GLORY HALLELUJAH! It works! Must've dried out on the inside.

Now I'm ecstatic, so I plug up and go out for my morning exercise.

Praise be to God! Seems silly to be so happy about something so little, but it means I don't have to spend another $70 on something I already had.

SOLD!

I sold my Playstation! Nope -- not on Craig's List. Not even on Ebay. I was talking about it at lunch with a coworker. Another coworker walked in and asked what we were talking about. He then asked me to go home and get it. It's a gift for his kids.

It just goes to show ya -- you never know who's listening or who's interested.

Now I'm to the business of spending this newfound money! :)

With Craig's Help

I took the plunge and listed my PS2 for sale. Yet I did not use the traditional methods (newspaper or online auction site). Instead, I used an up-and-coming (for some) ad site called Craig's List [http://www.craigslist.org].

The best part about it? It's free! It doesn't cost a nickel to list my item for sale and there's no commission charge. Yet it's rumored that this guy's company makes a million a year. His revenue comes from employers paying to list job offerings.

The Raleigh section of the website started up not too long ago. There's not a huge mass of people on it yet, but I still like my chances.

And if I change my mind because I'm jonesin' for some video game action, I can always pull my ad from the site.

Oh, and by the way -- I've received two inquiries within just a few hours of posting my low-tech text-only ad (pictures are optional) and one offer to buy. Can't complain about that!

If I don't get what I want from Craig's list, I can always post an ad in the new traditional method -- Ebay.

Unplugging...

I am thinking about totally unplugging from my video game hobby. I haven't purchased a game in quite some time. I haven't even rented one lately. The only reason I'm thinking of keeping it is to be able to exercise indoors with DDR. But I've been jogging more lately, and haven't really been using that either.

I've also been doing more reading of late. In addition, I just like board games a whole lot better!

So, if you're interested, send me a message using the 'Contact' link at the top left of this page. It's a fully functional system with 2 PS2 controllers, 3 games (Madden Football 2004, NBA Ballers, and Dance Dance Revolution Max 2), and the dance pad for DDR. Pictures can be provided.

There's a price that I am shooting for -- if you meet it, we'll talk.

Game on,
Bert
