Traveling with Munchkins

Emily Anne took our second real road trip this past week. I was a bit apprehensive before we left – worried that she would be completely thrown off by spending so much time in a car, sleeping in hotel rooms, and the constant attention that she would get from my family. When we are at home, we stick to a pretty predictable routine of nursing, playing, and sleeping. This trip, though, threw all of that out the window.

I’m sure that this won’t be the last time that our daughter surprises us. She was wonderful! For almost all of the time on the road, she looked around in the car, stared at her activity arch, or slept. That was especially helpful when the roads were so treacherous coming home. She also continued to sleep through the night in spite of all of the changes.

On Tuesday of last week, she went to the pediatrician’s office for her 2 month checkup and shots. Emily Anne came back with rave reviews. She is now weighing 11 lb. 8 oz. and is ranking in the 70th to 80th percentile on her length, head circumference, and weight. She especially impressed the doctor with her friendly and joyful personality. As a Mom, I was most surprised by the fact that she was comforted by my picking her up. It’s hard, many times, to know if she recognizes her parents at all.

This past week, we also welcomed a new little friend into the world – Evan Thompson. We look forward to watching him grow along with Emily Anne.

10 Weeks and Growing ....

Emily Anne passed her 10 week milestone yesterday. She is almost 3 months old! As each day passes, her personality seems to come out more and more. Her favorite things are staring at the wall (we think at the shadow of the ceiling fan) and listening to her parents make funny vowel sounds.

What is a normal day for her? Well, we try to keep her on a 2.5/3 hour block schedule. For the first 30-45 minutes, she is nursing. While she nurses, Mommy reads or writes letters. Then, she plays for about 45 minutes. Playing includes:

After some "active time", she goes down for a nap of about an hour. That gives her Mommy time to do laundry, write email, clean the house, and prepare dinner, etc.

All in all, she seems to be a very happy little person. She only cries when there's something wrong - which is usually a dirty diaper, pacifier emergency (her pacifier has fallen out of her mouth) or that she's hungry. And let's be honest here - wouldn't we be fussy if we had the same issues? I think so.

We'll continue to try and update the website with pics, and maybe a new video in the near future!

What are we going to call this Blog when Emily's 16?

I guess if it's up to me, I would still want to call it the "Baby Blog" - she will always be our baby, but I can hear the "Awwww.... Mom ....." that we will get.

Little Miss Emily is getting so very big so very quickly. It's been great in the past few days to really see her personality emerging. She is such a joyful little person. She really doesn't cry that much and when she does, she always has a reason. There's nothing like seeing that little face light up and a big toothless grin spread across her face.

During the holidays, she has perfected her skills at the Kick 'N' Crawl barn - which is a mat that sits on the floor and has two arches that rise above it. When Emily kicks the chicken, it starts playing "Old MacDonald". She can also work on her motor skills with the corn rattle, the pig mirror and other dangling barnyard dandies.

We have also started playing with the beautiful head of hair that she has. A family friend suggested using toothpaste to make hairclips stay put. Now she sports the "Pebbles" look quite well. Thus, Her Mom and Nan had to go to the mall and pick up some hairbows for her.

Over the past two weeks, she has been held and loved by many in her family - both direct and extended - as we have celebrated the holidays. It makes us wish that they were all closer. I'm sure that Emily will be suffering from some attention withdrawal as we start the New Year.

On Sunday, Emily will be 8 weeks old (or 2 months) if you can believe it! To celebrate we will be posting pictures from all of our recent adventures! Stay tuned!
