The First Adolescence

I was reading earlier this week in a Focus on the Family parenting book that we have about the so-called "First Adolescence". Did Em know that I was preparing? The next day, it was upon us.

The First Adolescence is similar to the teenage years in that your toddler is testing your boundaries. They are trying your authority and seeing if you will stick to your guns. They are also enthusiastically asserting their will.

Yes, this is definitely the phase that we are in. My beloved, charming little Emily Anne is gone. I'm not sure who this is that is sleeping in her crib. She looks like our daughter, and as her mother, I feel certain that this is the one that they showed me in the delivery room. When it comes to her new "personality", though, I'm not so sure!

Sign language has pretty much been thrown out the window. Only days ago we had a pretty solid vocabulary that Em was using to communicate her desires. The new Em whines or screams to convey her desires. Not cute. Let's not even talk about meltdowns.

Let's talk about her new diet. Only certain foods that position themselves in certain directions and at exactly a certain temperature are acceptable. This criteria also has been known to change depending on the weather. Our fallbacks, at the moment, are peanut butter toast and .... peanut butter toast. Everyone once in a while a chicken nugget might sneak in there. Forget the plethora of vegetables that used to grace her tray, or the numerous healthy fruits that she once loved.

They say that God never gives you more than you can handle. Hmmmm.... I've also heard that God will never call us to something that we can do ourselves. Well, I'm certainly in that boat - parenting helps us realize our desperate need for help from above - from whence our little ones come. :)
