Head Knowledge vs. Heart Knowledge

In our small group, we are doing a study on the book of Ephesians. Last night’s focus was on the latter half of chapter one. The following verses began a discussion that I would like to touch upon here:

17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

In these verses, Paul the apostle is praying for the people of the church. He is praying that they might know God better.

We discussed what it means to know God. Does it mean knowing a lot about the Bible? Or going to church and being a good person? What about charity and good deeds?

You can win all the money in the Bible category on Jeopardy and still not know God. Surprised? James chapter two, verse 19 reads:

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.

You can know a lot about God and still not know Him. To know Him is to put your trust in Him and to obey Him. It means to have a relationship with Him. That’s the difference between Christianity and all the other religions of the world. We serve a living God! It’s not about a lot of rules that you have to follow, otherwise known as religion. It’s not about knowing facts about the Bible, or even understanding good doctrine about God. It’s about having personal interaction with The Master of the Universe. Until you ask Jesus to remove your sins, and place Him as the leader of your life, it is all for naught.

Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3

Uncomfortable with the phrases ‘head knowledge’ and ‘heart knowledge?’ You can read a word study here: Biblical Word Study.
